Machining Cost Calculator

Estimate batch and per-part costs from machining, setup and materials.

Currency changes the display only. No exchange-rate conversion is applied.

Inputs

Enter a whole-number quantity of at least 1, time per part and setup time for the entire batch. Costs and times may be zero. Leave tooling / other batch cost blank to use zero. Use the same currency for all amounts; currency selection changes labels without converting values.

Use your own machine hour rate and cost definitions. Labor and overhead may already be included in that rate; avoid adding the same costs twice. Setup uses the same hour rate as machining. Profit, tax and any costs not entered are not added automatically.

Formula · How it works

Formula

Production hours = Machining minutes per part × Quantity / 60; Total cost = Production hours × Hour rate + Setup minutes / 60 × Hour rate + Material cost per part × Quantity + Other batch cost; Cost per part = Total cost / Quantity

Convert machining and setup times to hours before applying the machine hour rate. Machining cost = time per part × quantity × hour rate. Setup cost = setup hours × hour rate. Material cost = material cost per part × quantity. Add these costs and the other batch cost, then divide by quantity for cost per part. The displayed formula uses minutes; other selected time units are converted automatically.

Worked example

For 100 parts at 6 minutes each, production machining time is 10 hours. At 60 per hour, machining costs 600. A 60-minute setup adds 60, material at 5 per part adds 500, and tooling adds 100. Total batch cost is 1,260 and cost per part is 12.60, in the selected currency.

How it works

The per-part machining time and material cost repeat for every part. Setup and other batch costs are added once, so a larger batch spreads those costs over more parts. Use the Machining Time calculator to estimate processing time and the Machine Hour Cost calculator to build an hourly cost basis.

Common questions

How is machining cost per part calculated?

Add machining, setup, material and other batch costs, then divide the total by quantity. Machining and material costs scale with quantity, while setup and other batch costs are entered once for the job.

What should I include in the machine hour rate?

Use the hourly cost defined by your business, which may include equipment, labor and overhead. The Machine Hour Cost calculator can help estimate an equipment cost basis. Do not add a cost separately if it is already included in the rate.

How does setup time affect unit cost?

Setup time is charged once at the entered machine hour rate. Its contribution to each part is setup cost divided by quantity, so the same setup is spread over more parts in a larger batch.

Where do tooling and other batch costs go?

Enter costs for the whole batch in the optional tooling / other batch cost field. That amount is added once, not multiplied by quantity. Leave it blank or enter zero when no separate batch cost applies.

Does changing the currency convert my costs?

No. Currency selection changes the displayed label only. Keep all input amounts in one currency; no exchange-rate conversion is applied.
