Tile Calculator
Estimate tiles and optional boxes from surface and tile dimensions.

- Waste allowance before rounding

This is an area-based estimate. It does not model grout spacing, a specific laying pattern, cut placement or reuse of offcuts. Adjust your waste allowance for the layout and keep in mind that whole boxes may contain more tiles than the displayed required tile count.
Formula · How it works
Formula
Raw tiles = Total area / Tile area; Required tiles = ceil(Raw tiles × (1 + Waste% / 100)); Required boxes = ceil(Required tiles / Tiles per box)Total area = area length × area width. Tile area = tile length × tile width. Raw tiles = total area ÷ tile area. Add raw tiles × waste percentage / 100, then round the total up to the next whole tile. If tiles per box is entered, divide required tiles by tiles per box and round up again. ceil means rounding up to a whole number.
Worked example
A 5 m × 4 m surface has an area of 20 m². Each 0.3 m × 0.3 m tile covers 0.09 m², giving approximately 222.222 tiles before waste. Adding 10% gives approximately 244.444 tiles, which rounds up to 245. With 10 tiles per box, 25 boxes are required.
How it works
Surface and tile dimensions are converted to a common unit before their areas are compared. The waste allowance is calculated from the unrounded tile count, and rounding happens after the allowance is added. The optional box calculation uses the rounded required tile count.
Common questions
How many tiles do I need?
Divide the surface area by the area of one tile, add your waste percentage and round up to a whole tile. Both areas must use consistent units; the calculator converts the selected dimension units for you.
How much extra tile should I buy?
Choose a waste allowance for cutting, breakage and any spare tiles you want to keep. The initial 10% is editable. A layout with many cuts or a pattern can require a different allowance; this calculator does not plan the cuts.
Why should tile quantity be rounded up?
Tiles are purchased as whole pieces, so a fractional result cannot be ordered directly. The calculator adds waste before rounding up once. For example, a total of 244.444 tiles becomes 245 required tiles.
How do I calculate the number of tile boxes?
Enter the positive whole number of tiles in one box. Divide the rounded required tile count by that number and round up. For 245 tiles sold in boxes of 10, you need 25 boxes. Leave the field blank if you only need a tile count.
