Dimensional Weight Calculator

Compare volume-based weight with actual package weight.

Unit system

Inputs

Enter dimensions for one package and a positive custom divisor. The initial 5,000 cm³/kg is an editable example. Leave actual weight blank for dimensional weight only; enter zero or more to compare chargeable weight.

Formula · How it works

Formula

Dimensional weight = Length × Width × Height / Divisor; Chargeable weight = max(Actual weight, Dimensional weight); Total weight = Weight per package × Quantity

For centimeters, divide cm³ by a divisor in cm³/kg to obtain kg. For inches, divide in³ by a divisor in in³/lb to obtain lb. The calculator converts dimensions and the divisor to consistent units internally. Changing the unit system converts the same divisor; it does not select a new carrier policy.

Worked example

A 50 cm × 40 cm × 30 cm package has a volume of 60,000 cm³. With a divisor of 5,000 cm³/kg, dimensional weight is 12 kg. An actual weight of 10 kg gives 12 kg chargeable weight per package; ten identical packages give 120 kg. If actual weight is 20 kg, the per-package comparison instead gives 20 kg.

How it works

Dimensional weight assigns a weight to the space a package occupies. A smaller divisor gives a larger dimensional weight. When actual weight is entered, the calculator takes the larger value for each identical package and multiplies by quantity. No billing increment or minimum charge is applied.

Common questions

What is dimensional weight?

It is a volume-based weight calculated by dividing package volume by a dimensional divisor. It lets a shipment's space usage be compared with its actual weight.

How is dimensional weight calculated?

Multiply length, width and height, then divide by the divisor in matching units. Use cm³/kg for centimeter dimensions or in³/lb for inch dimensions.

What is a dimensional weight divisor?

It is the volume allowed per unit of dimensional weight. You can enter a custom value. The example value is not a promise about any carrier's current rules.

What is chargeable weight?

This calculator compares actual and dimensional weight and reports the larger value. A carrier's billed weight may differ because of its rounding, minimums or other rules.

Why can dimensional weight be higher than actual weight?

A large, light package can occupy more space than its mass suggests. Its volume divided by the selected divisor can therefore exceed its measured weight.
